38 Year Old Charged with Attempted Rape in Town

A 38-year-old man has been charged following an attempted rape of a teenage girl in Bury St Edmunds.

The incident occurred in the very early hours of Saturday 9 March.

The victim, a 15-year-old girl, was waiting on Risbygate Street in the town at just after midnight when she was approached by a man who suggested that she go with him to a nightclub. The girl agreed and walked with the man across Lower Baxter Street car park where she was then sexually assaulted by him.

The incident was subsequently reported to police a week later on the 15 March and an investigation was immediately launched. The victim is being supported by specially trained officers.

After pursuing a number of lines of enquiry, officers identified a suspect who was arrested on 17 March and taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre to be questioned by detectives.

Shakibul Hussain of Bury St Edmunds has been charged with attempted rape. He is due to appear before Suffolk Magistrates’ Court today, Tuesday 19 March.
