Historic town centre clock stops for only the second time on record

Moyse’s Hall Museum town clock has stopped for only the second time ever on record.

The clock, which is over 144 years old was allowed to stop back in 2018 to allow for work to be carried out on the building.

However this morning, Thursday 13th August, the clock stopped. The museums curatorial team managed to get it going again but it then stopped a few hours later.

Speaking on Facebook the museum said “This morning We’ve got a fault on the Moyse’s Hall clock, maybe the poor thing is struggling in the heat! Aren’t we all? The curatorial team has managed to get it going again once but it stopped a few hours later so we’re calling in the specialists”.

The clock usually takes 250 turns to wind and it takes a member of heritage staff 20 minutes to do so every Tuesday.

It was bought in 1876 from Vale and Richardson, of Abbeygate Street.
