Residents angered after far right leaflets delivered to homes in Bury St Edmunds

Residents in Bury St Edmunds have been left angered after leaflets from a far-right group have been delivered to homes.

Activists from the group Patriotic Alternative posted leaflets claiming that white Britons would become a minority by the 2060s.

Angered locals took to social media with one saying that this “narrative is not welcome in our town”.

Leaflets claiming that white Britons would become a minority by the 2060s were delivered to homes in Bury St Edmunds.

Homes in Raingate Street, Sextons Meadows, and Nowton Road areas of the town received the leaflets through their door, which were delivered by two people – one dressed as Santa.

Patriotic Alternative was formed in September 2019 by British neo-Nazi Mark Collett, who was the former leader of the British National Party Youth.

A Suffolk Police spokesperson said, “We’re aware of the leaflet and are conducting enquiries”.

In a joint statement on Facebook, Councillors from the Bury St Edmunds Town Council said, “We, the Bury St Edmunds Town Councillors were appalled to learn that racist propaganda has been distributed through residents’ letterboxes on Sunday 20 December 2020.

Apart from any considerations about the ‘season of goodwill’, the Town Councillors believe that equality and justice are – and must be – the mainstays of British society and there is no place for racism and fearmongering about the dangers of ‘otherness’ in our town.

Those who seek to incite people to view others with suspicion, fear, or hatred have learnt nothing either from history or the current pandemic which has seen the collaboration of neighbours, strangers, families, and society as a whole on an unprecedented scale.

Bury St Edmund’s Town Councillors want to make it clear that racist, homophobic, anti-Semitic, and Islamophobic propaganda will not be tolerated in our town at any level and will do everything they can to root out and condemn such actions”.
