RWSfm 103.3, the local radio station for West Suffolk, is marking the retirement of Station Manager Julie MacLeod, who has dedicated more than two decades to local broadcasting.

Julie began her broadcasting journey in July 2005 with Radio West Suffolk—the hospital radio station that would later evolve into RWSfm 103.3—starting out ‘ward walking’ (taking requests from patients) before quickly moving to becoming a presenter and joining the management team.
Julie played a key role in the launch of RWSfm 103.3 as a community station in 2010 and has been instrumental in its growth ever since. Under her leadership, the station introduced hourly local news bulletins, expanded its transmission power, and secured extended licensing from Ofcom. Today, RWSfm 103.3 reaches listeners on FM, online, and via smart speakers.
Julie’s impact extended well beyond the studio. She hosted flagship shows like the breakfast and drivetime programmes, delivered heartfelt messages to troops overseas, led mental health discussions, and supported countless local businesses, charities, and organisations. She also mentored aspiring broadcasters, including now-Formula 1 commentator Alex Jaques.
“Julie has truly been the backbone of the station, both on and off the air,” said Co-Station Manager Ryan McClean. “Beyond her exceptional broadcasting and leadership, she’s been incredibly supportive of our volunteers—often going above and beyond to offer personal encouragement and guidance. Her connection to the community has been outstanding, forging strong relationships with local businesses, OurBuryStEdmunds BID, charities, voluntary organisations, and local councils and councillors.”
As the station celebrates its 15th anniversary on 103.3 FM, it also looks ahead to a new chapter with a renewed five-year licence from OFCOM.
RWSfm 103.3 is broadcast and produced in Bury St Edmunds, with all presenters volunteering their time and talent. The station is currently inviting new presenters to join the team. Applications are open via the website RWSfm.co.uk or emailing hello@rwsfm.co.uk.
