Bury man jailed for breaching anti-social behaviour injunction

A man has been jailed after repeatedly breaching an Anti-Social Behaviour Injunction (ASBI) in Bury St Edmunds.

William Jermyn, 36, of Saltsman Road, was arrested on Thursday 25 September on Cornhill and taken into custody. He was later charged with six counts of breaching the order for offences committed on 15, 16 and 25 September.

He appeared at Bury St Edmunds County Court on 26 September, where he was sentenced to three months in prison.

An ASBI is an order that prohibits offenders from engaging in specific anti-social behaviour and can also require them to take steps to address its causes.

Inspector Joseph Nettleton of Bury St Edmunds Community Policing Team said:
“Alcohol-related anti-social behaviour is a priority for the Community Team in Bury St Edmunds. Since the team was formed in December 2023, a huge amount of work has gone into tackling alcohol-related crime and disorder in the town centre.

“We continue to enforce the Public Space Protection Order, use our powers under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act, and make use of civil orders such as ASB injunctions. We also work with partners to support those with dependencies and direct them away from criminality.

“However, we recognise the impact alcohol-related anti-social behaviour has on our communities. For those who do not wish to engage with support services and continue to cause disorder, we will deal with them robustly.”
