Plans for a new West Suffolk Hospital have taken a significant step forward after contracts were signed with the construction company that will help deliver the long-awaited replacement facility.

West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust has appointed international construction firm Dragados to work alongside the Trust and the New Hospital Programme to develop the detailed design for the new hospital ahead of construction.

The appointment marks the latest milestone in the project, which will replace the existing West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds.

Ewen Cameron, chief executive of West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, said: “This is a major milestone in our journey towards delivering a new hospital for West Suffolk and marks the beginning of the next stage of the programme.

“We’ll continue working closely with staff, patients and local communities as we develop the detailed designs.

“There is still more to do but today is another important step towards providing modern facilities for future generations.”

The Trust said Dragados will now work with the project team to refine the hospital’s detailed designs, building on consultation that has already involved thousands of staff, patients and local residents.

The announcement follows a series of key milestones for the project, including the purchase of the Hardwick Manor site in Bury St Edmunds, the granting of outline planning permission, the development of the hospital’s initial designs, extensive public consultation, the submission of a reserved matters planning application and the appointment of the construction partner.

The programme is expected to submit its Outline Business Case later this year. Subject to the necessary approvals, construction is expected to begin between 2027 and 2028.

The new hospital is intended to provide modern facilities for patients and staff, serving communities across West Suffolk for future generations.
