Two men arrested after serious collision near Ixworth

A man has been arrested following a four-vehicle collision near Ixworth which left another driver with potentially life-changing injuries.

Police were called shortly before 8am on Saturday, October 3, after reports of a collision on the A143 between Ixworth and Stanton.

A black BMW M140i and a grey BMW 635 Coupe were travelling in the same direction, while a green Claas forage harvester and a blue New Holland tractor towing a trailer were travelling in the opposite direction.

All four vehicles were involved in the collision.

The driver of the BMW 635 Coupe, a man in his 50s, became trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extracted by emergency crews. He was taken to hospital with potentially life-changing injuries.

The driver of the BMW M140i failed to stop at the scene. Officers launched an investigation to locate him and a 48-year-old man was arrested in Bury St Edmunds at around 2.30pm.

He was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop after an accident. He was taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning and later released under investigation.

The 24-year-old driver of the New Holland tractor was also arrested, on suspicion of drug-driving. He was taken to hospital for a check-up before being questioned at Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre.

He was also released under investigation pending the outcome of blood tests.

The road remained closed throughout the afternoon while the BMW and tractor were recovered. Police left the scene at around 5.30pm, with National Highways taking over the closure into the evening to allow the road surface to be cleaned.

Police are appealing for witnesses, including motorists who were in the area at the time and may have dashcam footage.
