A man who was critically injured in a serious assault in Bury St Edmunds over the weekend has sadly died, prompting police to launch a homicide investigation.
Police were called to the St Olaves shopping precinct at 8:05pm on Saturday 26 July, following reports of an assault. The victim, a man in his 50s, sustained a serious head injury and was taken to West Suffolk Hospital, where he remained in a critical condition.
Suffolk Police have now confirmed that the man has died as a result of his injuries.
As a result, the investigation is being treated as homicide, and officers are working closely with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to progress the case.
The suspect, Andrew Allen, aged 54, was remanded in custody at a court hearing on Monday 28 July after originally being charged with causing grievous bodily harm. His case is now under review following the victim’s death.
Allen is next due to appear at Cambridge Crown Court on Tuesday 26 August.
Police have confirmed that the suspect and victim were believed to be known to one another and that no other individuals are being sought in connection with the incident.
Officers continue to offer support to the victim’s family and are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have relevant information to come forward.
