Police appeal after reported sexual assault in Bury St Edmunds

Police are appealing for witnesses and information after a woman in her 20s reported being sexually assaulted in Bury St Edmunds in the early hours of Saturday, October 10.

The incident reportedly took place between 2.20am and 3am in the Parkway and Kings Road area, as the woman was walking alone away from the town centre.

Police said she was approached from behind by an unknown man, who pulled her to the ground, touched her under her clothing and sexually assaulted her.

A woman who was passing by is reported to have come to the victim’s aid and helped her home. Detectives are particularly keen to speak to this woman, as she may have information that could assist the investigation.

The suspect is described as a tall, slim man aged around 40, with black hair. He was reportedly wearing grey joggers and a hoodie.

Detective Inspector Stuart Dolan-Allen said police understood the report may concern the local community and were investigating all lines of enquiry to identify the man responsible.

There will be increased targeted patrols in the area, and officers will be carrying out leaflet drops. Members of the public with concerns or information are encouraged to speak to uniformed officers.

Police are also reviewing CCTV opportunities and are asking anyone with relevant doorbell camera footage to come forward.

The victim is being supported by specially trained officers.
