Abbeygate Cinema to help welcome new independent cinema to Newmarket

Abbeygate Cinema has announced that it has started the fit-out of a new cinema operation within Kings Theatre Newmarket.

The cinema will launch in April 2024, in partnership with NOMADS (Newmarket Operatic, Musical & Dramatic Society) and the Newmarket Charitable Foundation. The cinema will operate between Wednesdays and Sundays, whilst theatre productions will continue in line with the theatre’s planned schedules. Longer term refurbishment works are planned for the theatre bar and other facilities, which it is hoped will be completed across 2024.

The cinema will programme a broad range of mainstream and arthouse films. Its schedules will include a deep programme of Event cinema, live arts and entertainment from global sources of music, theatre, dance and visual arts.

Gareth Boggis, General Manager of Abbeygate commented “we are delighted to partner on this project which brings community cinema to Newmarket, which has had no cinema provision for many years. We have several members who come to Abbeygate from Newmarket, which despite its closeness, is not always an easy journey. We look forward to building a loyal local audience in Newmarket. A team from Abbeygate will manage the operation and Pat Church is putting some of his great energy into the new launch”.

Josh Schumann, Executive Director for the Newmarket Charitable Foundation added ‘Abbeygate’s experience and expertise has enabled us to realise our dream to open an independent cinema in Newmarket, the benefit to NOMADS and The Kings Theatre makes this project even more special. The charity is thrilled to be able to fund the project knowing we have a wonderful venue and a brilliant team from Abbeygate working together to ensure the cinema is a success.’
