Bury St Edmunds Police Take Action Against Dangerous Drivers

Bury St Edmunds Police have issued warnings and taken action against reckless driving following reports of dangerous behavior on local roads. Posting on social media, police stated that on Sunday, 23 February, officers issued Section 59 Police Reform Act warnings to two vehicles involved in ‘drifting’ around roundabouts. The drivers were also reported for careless driving and operating vehicles in a dangerous condition due to severely worn tyres with exposed cords.

This crackdown is part of an ongoing initiative to address dangerous driving and ensure the safety of all road users. Authorities are particularly focused on curbing the reckless actions of a small number of individuals who misuse the town’s roads. Under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002, law enforcement has the power to act against vehicles being driven in a manner that causes alarm, distress, or annoyance to the public.

Police have reaffirmed their commitment to road safety and will continue to patrol the county’s highways. In addition to enforcement, officers aim to educate drivers on the ‘fatal four’—the leading causes of serious or fatal collisions:

  1. Excessive speed
  2. Using a mobile phone while driving
  3. Failing to wear a seatbelt
  4. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs

Residents are urged to play their part in keeping roads safe by reporting any dangerous driving incidents. Reports can be submitted through the official portal: Report here.
