UPDATE: Police make arrests following a fight where a hammer was used as a weapon

Three people have been arrested by police investigating an armed assault and affray in Bury St Edmunds.

Police were called just after 3 pm yesterday afternoon, Tuesday 29 August, to reports of a fight involving a group of people in Lake Avenue, at least one of whom was armed with a weapon – which was believed to be a hammer of some description.

A man aged in his 50s was taken to hospital by ambulance and was treated for a suspected fractured cheekbone and lacerations to his face.

A number of police units were dispatched to the scene – including armed officers as is standard when weapons are believed to be present.

A 43-year-old man from the Sudbury area and a 16-year-old boy from Bury St Edmunds were arrested nearby just before 4pm on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.

This morning, Wednesday 30 August, a 46-year-old man from Bury St Edmunds was arrested on suspicion of affray.

All three were taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre, where they remain for questioning.

Officers are treating this as an isolated incident and do not believe there is any cause for concern for the wider community.
