A man arrested in connection with a serious sexual assault in Bury St Edmunds has been released on bail, as enquiries into the incident continue.
Officers on duty in the town centre were approached at just before 3am yesterday morning, Sunday 4 December, and informed of the incident.
The victim, a woman aged in her 20s, subsequently reported being attacked in an alleyway between King’s Road and the Waitrose car park off Robert Boby Way, at some time between midnight and 2.30am yesterday.
Yesterday afternoon officers arrested a 37-year-old man from North Norfolk on suspicion of rape.
He was taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning and has subsequently been released on bail until Wednesday 1 March next year, pending further enquiries.
A police investigation is ongoing, but detectives are treating this as an isolated incident and understand that the parties involved had met earlier in the evening.
Officers are continuing to appeal for any potential witnesses, and in particular anyone who was in the vicinity of the car park and surrounding roads who may have seen or heard anything.
