Police investigating after incidents of people fraudulently collecting money for charity

Police are investigating after two incidents were reported of people fraudulently collecting money for charity in Bury St Edmunds.

The first incident happened in Waitrose car park in the town at about 1 pm on Tuesday 9th January and a second incident was reported at 2:30 pm in the car park of West Suffolk Hospital.

In one incident one of the offenders took a quantity of cash from a victim after it was claimed the offenders were raising money for the hospital.

West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust said” The Trust has been made aware of an incident yesterday, Tuesday, 9 January, involving individuals attempting to take donations from members of the public fraudulently on West Suffolk Hospital grounds. 

The Trust is currently investigating this incident and the police have been notified.

Only My WiSH Charity, Friends of West Suffolk Hospital and pre-approved registered charities are permitted to undertake promotion or fundraising activity on our hospital sites, so please remain vigilant.”

Speaking on social media a Suffolk Police spokesperson said “Enquiries are ongoing and anyone who has experienced a similar situation should contact Bury St Edmunds police online https://orlo.uk/UtDDM or on 101“.
