Suffolk County Council have paid tribute to Councillor Robert Everitt.
Robert, who passed away over the weekend, leaves behind a legacy of over four decades of service to Suffolk, marked by his unwavering commitment to the community.
Robert’s political journey began in 1981 as a parish councillor in Wickhambrook, where he quickly became known for his strong belief that “you only get out of life what you put in.”
During his career he held hold numerous prominent positions, including Mayor of St Edmundsbury Borough Council and Cabinet Member for Families and Communities at West Suffolk Council.
In 2017, Robert was elected as a County Councillor, and in 2022, he was appointed Chairman of Suffolk County Council.
“Robert’s contribution to public life was exceptional,” said Councillor Liz Harsant, Chairman of Suffolk County Council. “His calm wisdom, kindness, tireless energy, and unfailing sense of humour touched everyone who worked with him. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.”
He played an integral role in the popular Christmas Fayre for many years and was often seen cycling through the streets of Bury St Edmunds—famously once in his full Mayoral robes. He had a gift for connection; with residents, colleagues, and with causes close to his heart, from encouraging a love of reading among young people to championing those with hearing impairments and advocating for children with dyslexia.
Councillor Matthew Hicks, Leader of Suffolk County Council, expressed his condolences: “Robert’s loss will be felt deeply across Suffolk, especially in Bury St Edmunds, where he was such an integral part of the community. Above all, our hearts go out to his wife Diane, their two daughters, and the entire family during this incredibly difficult time.”
