Two men arrested for shoplifting after running from Police

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of theft following an incident of shoplifting in Bury St Edmunds.

Police were called shortly after 4:40pm yesterday, Wednesday 4 August, to reports that three males had stolen a quantity of clothing from JD Sports in the Arc Shopping Centre. The suspects were pursued by staff, one of whom sustained minor injury after being punched in the head by one of the suspects.

The suspects were then reported to have left the Buttermarket carpark in a red car.

At approximately 4:50pm, officers received a further call reporting a fail-to-stop collision involving a red car, which had left the scene, a blue Ford KA and a transit van at the junction of Cullum Road, Wilks Road and Barons Road. No one was injured in the collision.

A damaged red Volkswagen was located in the Hardwick Heath carpark, however the occupants had fled the scene.

Officers conducted a search of the area and located two men matching the description of the suspects walking along Park Lane in Hawstead, who then ran from police.

Following a short pursuit, a 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of theft from a shop.

At approximately 6:30pm, a 24-year-old man was located in a field off Horse Croft Lane and arrested on suspicion of theft from a shop, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and assault.

Both men were taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning, where they remain.

At least one further male suspect remains outstanding and police are conducting enquiries to locate him.
