Bury St Edmunds Christmas Lights Switch On to go ahead with Charities and community groups benefitting from free festive stalls

Charities and community groups are snapping up free festive stalls at the town centre event
that will kick off Christmas in Bury St Edmunds. And the team behind it are urging any
organisations still keen to take one of the stalls at no cost not to leave it too much longer to
book, if they wish to be part of the popular annual Christmas Lights Switch On.

The free admission night out will see street entertainment, fairground rides, street food and a
variety of festive market stalls ahead of the switching on of the lights across the town centre
on Thursday November 18. A number of shops in the town are likely to be open later for
Christmas shoppers.

The town’s Christmas lights have been managed by the Business Improvement District (BID)
organisation Our Bury St Edmunds since 2010. Last year saw the event ran virtually with a video released as well as a virtual event ran on RWSfm 103.3 featuring the charities and community organisations that would have been at the event.

Chief Executive Mark Cordell said: “There wasn’t much about Christmas 2020 to look forward to, so we aim to put that right this year with an event that gives the festive season the start it deserves. We know how tough the past 18 months have been and that’s why we are offering free pitches at our festive market for charities, community groups and BID member businesses who want to take part.
“As an open air event we’ll be planning it within strict guidelines and have made a few changes to be able to ensure it’s as safe as possible. This is the fourth town centre event we have put on this year and it will launch the countdown to Christmas from the BID and partner organisations.”

Charities, community groups or BID member businesses wishing to book a pitch at the event
which runs from 2pm to 8pm should contact the Our Bury St Edmunds office on 01284
