Lorry driver sentenced for drink driving after being seen swerving across the A14

In the week Suffolk police’s annual Christmas drink and drug driving campaign is launched, officers have charged a man with drink driving near Bury St Edmunds.

Officers received numerous calls on a HGV lorry reportedly swerving over the road on Saturday 26 November. The driver stopped the vehicle on the off slip at junction 44 on the eastbound carriageway of the A14. No-one was hurt in the incident.

A male was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst over the limit and was taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

62 year old Nigel Hodges of Yew Tree Road in Attleborough was charged with driving whilst over the alcohol limit, 127 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

He was remanded to appear before Ipswich Magistrates Court on Monday 28 November. He was subsequently sentenced to eight weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months. He was also banned from driving for 48 months and ordered to pay costs of £250.
