Man arrested in connection with serious sexual assault

Police investigating a serious sexual assault in Bury St Edmunds have made an arrest in connection with the incident.

Officers on duty in the town centre were approached at just before 3am this morning, Sunday 4 December, and informed of the incident.

The victim, a woman aged in her 20s, subsequently reported being attacked in an alleyway between King’s Road and the Waitrose car park off Robert Boby Way, at some time between midnight and 2.30am.

Following initial police enquiries, officers have this afternoon arrested a 37-year-old man from North Norfolk on suspicion of rape. He has been taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

The victim continues to be supported by specialist trained officers. A cordon which was put in place at the crime scene was lifted at around 1pm this afternoon.

Detectives would like to hear from any potential witnesses, in particular anyone who was in the vicinity of the car park and surrounding roads who may have seen or heard anything.
